Laser Procedures

The Waterlase MD laser (Er,Cr:YSGG) tissue cutting system is a unique device with diverse hard and soft tissue dental applications.

For hard tissue (teeth, bone), the laser utilizes water atomization technology - a spray of water is "activated" by the laser, the water molecule "explodes" and this is what "cuts" the tooth.  The optical output of the laser and water atomization is adjusted for each desired procedure - cutting teeth or cutting tissue. The laser properties have the unique effect of NOT needing anesthesia (novocaine) for many of the patients undergoing laser treatments.

Our office has incorporated the laser technology for over 20 years - we were one of the first offices in Massachusetts to acquire and use the laser for better patient treatment.  It has been very helpful in treating children - no longer does the "shot" have to be endured by our younger patients.

Laser can be used:

  • removing decay in teeth without anesthesia; primary teeth (baby teeth) is the best situation for use (no needles/numbness to scare the kids!!)
  • especially in front teeth - good access to decay
  • removal of tissue - certain skin lesions (skin tags)
  • periodontal treatment - sterilize deep pockets and several treatments can actually reduce pocket depth and promote healing
  • sterilization of root canals - a great advantage for success of root canal treatment
  • removal of certain types of dental restorations
  • decreasing root sensitivity

Laser can not be used:

  • area where metal is present
  • back too far in the mouth - unable to direct laser properly
  • patient unable to open wide enough for back teeth restoration
  • patient unable to keep mouth still during procedure
